Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

The objectives of this project have been the numerical representation of naturally fractured reservoir using the following approaches:

  • Dual porosity
  • Dual porosity and full-tensor permeability for the fractures
  • Discrete fracture using unstructured grids


The dual porosity model has been implemented in GPAS in compositional gas and chemical modules. A 2D discrete fracture model has recently been implemented in the compositional gas module. We are in the process of extending the model to 3D. The influence of these approaches on recovery processes such as chemical, gas, and water injections will be a topic of interest.
