Enhancement of High Performance Water-Based Muds

We have previously shown that nanoparticles can reduce hydraulic flow into shales, and this is one of the main requirements to develop a good borehole-stabilizing mud system.

To develop them into a mature mud system, however, much more work is required, including the investigation of the effects of nano-particles on (1) mud fluid loss characteristics, (2) rheological properties, (3) lubricity and friction reduction, (4) reservoir impairment, (5) temperature and pressure stability etc. If successful, these investigations could make a meaningful contribution to development of a new generation of environmentally benign water-based muds that could rival the beneficial characteristics of oil-based/synthetic muds.
