Gas EOR Project 2: Novel Foaming System for Improving Areal and Vertical Sweep in CO2 Floods

Several strategies have been proposed for reducing gravity override and fingering in CO2 floods. We propose to explore the use of novel foaming systems that improve vertical conformance and are optimally stable in the presence of an oil phase. The rheology of these CO2 foams will be studied as a function of foam quality, texture, temperature, and shear rate. Foam stability tests will be conducted in the presence of different crude oils. Core flow tests will be conducted in heterogeneous cores to measure injectivity, fluid diversion and oil recovery. Reservoir compositional simulations will also be conducted to scale up the core flow results to the field so that the best strategies for using such viscosifiers can be explored under a variety of different conditions.
